From Episode 40 with Coach Bryce Kirkley
Progression Over Perfection: Team Routines and Individual Athlete Development
By Cheer Dads Unfiltered
An athlete can contribute fully to a team and still have individual development goals that go beyond the current routine.
In Episode 40, Coach Bryce Kirkley and the dads separated two jobs that often get blurred: cleaning a competition routine, and helping an athlete develop over time. The theme tying them together was progression over perfection.
Two goals can coexist
A team needs consistent, clean execution. An individual athlete may also benefit from appropriate skill development that isn't in the routine yet.
Programs balance these differently. It's reasonable to ask your gym how current team needs and longer-term athlete goals fit together.
Development doesn't always look identical
Athletes bring different strengths and challenges to walkovers, handsprings and other skills. In Coach Bryce's perspective, good coaching starts with assessing the athlete in front of you and adapting an appropriate path.
That isn't permission to skip prerequisites, and it isn't a judgment about safety readiness. Technical decisions belong to a qualified coach who has seen your athlete in person.
Keep placement separate from individual training
Working on a skill outside the routine doesn't mean automatic placement on a different team or level. Level and program decisions, and the applicable safety rules, are separate questions.
A few questions that keep the conversation clear:
- What can my athlete develop right now?
- What needs more consistency first?
- How does this plan fit their role on the team?
Include the athlete's goals
Athletes' interests vary — cheer, dance, or something else entirely — and so do their aspirations. Coach Bryce spoke about wanting to help develop future college athletes; that's one coach's lens, not recruiting guidance or a goal every family needs to share.
